Hmm, this is an interesting comment. A friend gave me his older copy of
Star Control 2, the release that came out before it had GUS support. I
played it with SBOS 2.08 and SBOS 1.20 and all the mods played without a
hitch, in fact, it sounds as good as the later version with GUS support!
Here's the weird part: the old version with no GUS support has the same
sound effect garbling problem with SBOS as the new version does with
native support! How can this be a problem with the SDK that existed at
that early stage? Has anybody listened to SC2 on a real SB? Does it mix
up the sound effects there, too? I did notice that the garbling was
different in the old version, other sounds get thrown around at the wrong
times, than in the new version.
Forget Gusmod, send them ZZPlay or Metal.

Subject: GUS/retail
Bill Norton, I'm also sure you'd like to know that the GUS has been
available since late spring at Best Buy. :) For those of you who don't
know, Best Buy is a huge retail store of home electronics, computers,
appliances, etc. in the Midwest... some of you know Circuit City, a
competitor of Best Buy, a little better.
A sure sign of a good market is seeing the item at a major* retailer
such as Best Buy.
Now, all we have to do is get gravis to send demo cards to the retailers
and get the retailers to approve it for display. A lot of people don't
realize this, but to display XYZ company's product, the head honchos at
the retailers have to approve the product to be demonstrated. They cannot
play favorites, or competitors would drop their business.
But I think the retail stores should get a demo for EACH sound card they
carry and let the buyer decide the GUS is the way to go. :)

I couldn't resist it.
And on splitting the Digest: Surely we just want games / anything other
than games. Just create the latter and let us sort ourselves out with
subscribe/unsubscribe. It shouldn't be called 'music' because that is
too restrictive, and leaves nowhere for the general questions.

.. I figured I'd contribute to RTZ info...
I am VERY impressed with the floppy-based version, as it supports the
GUS wonderfully*. The music is excellent, and the digi sound is good,
too.. not the greatest, but good. Incidentally, I heard the digi voices
on my friend's PAS 16 and the digi sound on the GUS was a LOT nicer than
on the PAS16.. I was also impressed because I have a SB16 in my system as
well.
RTZ was well done, and that's the way it should be done in future games.

Yup, Future Crew came through and 2nd Reality working fabulously on my DR
DOS system with a measly 572K free. No lockups or hangs, no complaints
about memory and a fine presentation!

I'd like to go on record as saying that I'm still for the split but I
would like to see a GUS newsgroup even more. I think we have enough
volume, at least judging from the time when I learned of this digest (I've
mostly been a lurker, I'm afraid) and it would make it much easier to get
to the appropriate messages.
If we did get our own newsgroup I don't think it would be necessary to
sub-divide it into a .gus.music and .gus.games type of arrangement since
the facilities of almost any newsreader make it easy to get to the
messages that you're interested in.
Just my two cents... Multiply by a few million and you're talking some
real money... *grin*

First, I would like to say that spltting the digest is a good idea, the
question is what to do with the 'other' questions. For example, where
would talk about the 16 bit daughter card go? I guess the only way to
be fair would be to have a 3rd address to send a message to Both, but
then for those who get both digests, you would read it twice.!!
As for a newsgroup. Well , some companies 'regulate' what newsgroups are readable
so in that case some people might miss out! Not every GUS user is a student.
Plus, wasnt that already attemped. (The ...soundcard.GUS)
I also agree it would be better to give EVERYBODY both digests and let them
unsubscribe to the one(s) they do not want. I many times skim the digest and might
miss the fact that there now two (2).
Anyways, these are my 3.141529 cents...
Does anybody know about Gravis financial status, I remember a few months ago some
one posting Gravis stock quote and quarterly report, does anyone still follow
that? Im kinda interested!!! I WONDER if being a stock owner might 'hurry up'
GRAVIS' work on OS/2 support???????

I agree. I would like both, but as many people seem to keep forgetting,
some people have to PAY to download the digest. Having separate lists
would be nice for them. Especially a new GUS owner who wants to download
a lot of old digests to get up to speed. They may not care to pay big $$$
to get games or music info.
As for creating a new newsgroup, remember that the digest goes out to a
lot of places that don't get news. If we drop the digest for a new
newsgroup, these people will be left out in the cold. I think it's better
to spread the word as far as possible. Of course a new newsgroup in
addition to the digest would be nice, but that's something that should be
talked about on the regular soundcard group. (hint for new GUS owners.
It's already been tried several times. But if you want to try again, go
for it.)

Well, it's not really meant to demonstrate anything. It was meant to be a
nice little hint for those GUS owners who are sick and tired of their GUSes
going to waste while we wait on OS/2 support from Gravis. I know I would
prefer to hear SOMETHING as opposed to NOTHING while working with OS/2
(which is about 99% of the time.) I'm not really concerned with what it
does or doesn't demonstrate or what the card is or isn't doing. I just
want to use my GUS and this is just another work around.

Yes please split the digest, you can always look back through the archives
if you need to find some information that you have missed. I'm getting a
bit fed up of late with the amount of "How do I get X-Wing to run on my
ZX81" and also excessive bandwith repeating huge chunks of yesturdays
digest. I suggest a split into "Games" and "The Rest" be it Professional
Users or Non Teenage Freaks. I would also advocate sending out the FAQ to
all new subscribers, and maybe even once a month to EVERYONE!
To end how about a newsgroup? Surely we can pass the quorum by now?
Well that's my 2p's worth or should I say 0.002 ECU's.

If and only if this new newsgroup were digestified and bi-directionally
gatewayed with a mailing list would I be in favor of moving the digest to a
newsgroup. I happen to have access to a news, but this digest is e-mailed
around the world to many sites that don't have access to news. Even if a
newsgroup were created, you will still have people who want to split it
even further. I wonder how long it will be before someone suggests a
breakup into c.s.i.p.s.g.games.apogee.*, c.s.i.p.s.g.games.origin.*,
c.s.i.p.s.g.lucasarts.*, etc. :-)

Those of us with high performance internet connections shouldn't forget that
alot of people read the digest over a 2400 baud connection. IMHO, their
complaint that the digest is getting too big is *alot* more valid than other
complaints that two digests would mean a cluttered mail box or require more
"save space".
I vote for a split. (This split idea has generated alot of volume of its own!)

I am the owner of a Gravis Ultrasound card.
My problem is I cannot get it to function correctly with the new Electronic
Arts / Origin production "Privateer"
The card runs ok in standard Sound-Blaster mode, however when I try to
install speech the game constantly hangs. Is there a know fix for this?
